Growing up in America, I often found myself caught between two cultures. I knew from the first-hand experience of one culture, while my Vietnamese culture felt like a complete mystery. My interest in 2D art stems from growing up watching my brother constantly draw and create elaborate narratives. In elementary school, I was deterred from visual arts into the performing arts. My background in acting and dancing continues to help shape my understanding of emitting emotion through art.
My paintings and drawings are all collections of colors, subjects, and textures influenced by Western pop culture and explore my Southeast Asian culture. My pieces display an array of vivid colors and nontraditional Western beauty standards. I take pride in the research that goes into my pieces before drafting my projects. Experimenting with mixing mediums and not limiting my craft pushes me into an uncomfortable state of growth. With multi-media, I hope to discover what defines being caught between cultures.
